Have you ever heard of David Beckham, Juninho or Roberto Carlos? I'm sure you have heard of at least one of them.. Have you ever seen them amazingly curl the ball past the wall in a free-kick? Ever imagine how they do it? Wanting to try it? Well, you've come to the right place then!
Eventhough I'm not a good soccer player or a good ball curler, I'm a great researcher and I can compile all the facts you need.
Firstly, to start of my explanation, I will tell you what you need to have. Basically, yoú will just need a soccer ball, an open space(preferably a field) and maybe soccer boots. However, before starting this new feat, you should have some soccer skills in shooting and the will to continue practicing. REMEMBER to warm up and stretch before practicing as not doing so might result in injuries. Now with the explanation... To be able to bend the ball succesfully, placing the ball is an important factor. When placing the ball, make sure it sits high on the grass or turf. If you watch professional players, they usually toss the ball into place as it will leave the ball in a high position so that you can strike the lower half of the ball cleanly. Don't waste your money buying soccer boots which manufacturers claim to have a new "technology" to easily curl the ball. The key to bending the ball is not the equipment but how you strike the ball(hey, i talk as though i'm pro at it). Depending on the kind of lift you want on the ball, it should be struck somewhere on the lower half. The lower, the higher.. In order to get the ball spinning, you should strike the ball slightly off-center like the bottom corner. REMEMBER to take a relaxed run up before you shoot so you can bend the ball easier. The next important thing after striking the ball is the follow through. Although you should strike the ball slightly off-center, the follow through on the kick should carry your leg straight through (and well-past) the ball. The side you use depends on whether you use the outside or inside of your foot as well as where you want the ball to bend. For example, if you are right-footed and you strike the ball with the inside of your foot, the ball will bend left. Remember that the ball must be hit with a lot of force. What makes a ball spin is its forward velocity as well as the speed of its revolution. However, based on my experience, you should work on your technique before moving on to the speed and accuracy of the ball. With practice, you will be able to gauge how much you should bend the ball and how to position your free kick so that it curls past the defenders. The best part is a bent ball is very deceiving for goal keepers as it can start out going wide and then head straight for the corner.
Here are some extra tips on curling the ball:
